Martha of Bethany, who has the distinction of having hosted Jesus, was of royal descent on both her father Syro's and her mother Eucaria's side. Her father, Siro, ruled Syria and many coastal cities, while Martha, with her sister, was mistress, through her mother's line, of the entire cities of Magdala and Bethany, as well as part of Jerusalem.
