Imam Ali (‘a) asked a man about his manner. The man answered, “We hope and fear.” The Imam (‘a) spoke: He who hopes for something should seek it, and whoever fears something should escape it. I do not know the reality of the fear of a man who does not neglect the passion that he faces and I do not know the reality of the hope of a man who does not show steadfastness against a misfortune that befalls him for the sake of obtaining what he hopes for.
